UC Gardens Pavilion

The idea behind this model was to create a pavilion to stand on the lawn of the UC Botanical Gardens. I first designed my project with several print-paper iterations, followed by a white cardboard and for the final model. The shape of this structure is inspired by a plant I was researching called the Matilija Poppy (Figure 1). It has a very protruded flower bud which in turn inspired the central structure of my design. The 40 foot tall structure serves as a water collection system, which creates a cool and moist environment for those inside the building. There are two ways to enter: the rotating doors on each side of the pavilion to create a stronger effect of entering a space very different from the rest of the lawn or the open side entrances which provide direct access to the shade and moisture. The water collected through the central structure would remain untouched by man and transferred back into the sprinkler system of the gardens.
